An exploding generator is believed to be the cause of a fire on board a bulk carrier in WA's north in which two crewmen were injured.
A spokesman for the Port Hedland Seafarers Centre said the blaze started on the MV Marigold, moored at Finucane Island, yesterday afternoon.
Two men were treated for smoke inhalation and one of them might need to be flown to Perth today for further treatment, he said, One was from Korea and the other from Myanmar.
It’s understood investigators from the Australian Transport Safety Bureau are on their way to the ship.
Australian Transport Safety Bureau spokesman Michael Squires says a faulty generator is the likely cause of the fire but a full investigation of the incident would be carried out.
"Two of our investigators are on their way at the moment," he said.
"They'll talk to the crew and look at on-board recordings and things and find out what the safety factors that contributed to the event are."
