Mackerel trawler sank off Navia, three dead, two missing
On Apr 17, 2014, the "Mar Nosso" capsized around 1 p.m. The last position issued by the vessel through its tracking device was at 11.14,04.
The ship drifted for some time bottom up and sank at 7 p.m. 18 miles from Navia off the Asturias coast in Northern Spain. From the crew of 12, seven were rescued alive - two Portuguese and five Galicians, by the nearby Portuguese f/v "Galega Mar" from Muros, and taken to El Musel where a field hospital was set up by helicopter.
The boatswain, Juan Martin Calo, 53, from Marin; the chief engineer, Francisco Pereira Iglesias, 51, from Bueu, and the Portuguese Bernardino Augusto Kora Bicho, 48, were unharmed, and Póvoa from Varzim, was taken by the "Pesca 2" to Celeiro and thence to the Hospital da Costa at A Mariña Lucense for observation until Apr 18. One of the survivors had endured more than two hours in the water , while another crew member had saved himself onto bottom of the trawker, where he was localized by the Crew of the "Mar da Galega".
Two of the castaways who had suffered mild hypothermia were taken to the Hospital at Jove, while the other two who had suffered severy hypothermia were transferred with a mobile ICU to to Jove and the Cabueñes Hospital. Three fishermen were recovered dead, two Portuguese by the "Kica" from Roaz which were taken to the port of Gijón aboard the "Salvamar Capella" which had proceeded from Luarca within one hour after the alert, and another at 6.50 p.m. by the tug "Alonso de Chaves".
The Helimer 211 helicopter took the third body to Musel. All were transported to Oviedo for an autopsy. Two crew members were still missing. The MRCC Gijón coordinated the SAR operation.
