THE crew of the 6,800-TEU Maersk Kampala, drifting in the Suez Canal, is fighting a fire in two containers stacked forward, according to a statement from Maersk Line, the world's biggest container carrier.
"The vessel is fully maneuverable but drifting south of the Suez Canal. All crew are accounted for and no injuries have been reported. Communication with the vessel is ongoing. Tug boats with fire-fighting capability are on the scene fighting the fire," Maersk said.
It is the third blaze involving containers catching fire onboard vessels in the last two months. In July the crew of 1,740-TEU Hansa Brandenberg was forced to evacuate the vessel after containers in front of the accommodation block caught fire.
Earlier, containers aboard the 8,000-TEU MOL Comfort caught fire while it was being towed to Oman, the fire raged for five days before the forward section of the vessel sank.
