Five injured in ship fire, passengers evacuated
On June 14, 2013, a fire broke out on the "Nissos Mykonos" which had 174 passengers and 74 crew members on board, in the eastern Aegean Sea one mile off the port of Karlovassi on Samos. The fire broke out in the vessel's smokestack while it was sailing between Samos and the island of Ikaria.
Five people had to be evacuated and treated for respiratory problems. The four women and one man who needed treatment for smoke inhalation were given first aid by doctors on the ship and then taken to Samos by a Coast guard launch.
The remaining passengers were taken aboard the ferry "Panagia Theotokos" and have since been safely been transferred to Karlovasi. The operation was coordinated by the Harbor Master of Samos. From the very first moments of the fire, next to the "Nissos Mykonos" were three freighters, a passenger liner and a vessel of the port authority.
The fire was put out by the members of the crew. A tug was sent to the Scene and the ship due to enter port once it was declared safe. The "Nissos Mykonos" was coming Piraeus where it had sailed at noon and was heading for Samos with stops at the islands of Syros, Mykonos and Ikaria. It was the ship's first journey on that route this season. The reason of the fire and the extent of damage was yet unclear. The vessel was continuing its way towards Samos, while Coast guard vessels were heading for the area.
