SHIPOWNER ACL has deployed the first of five new con-ro vessels of the next G4 generation on the tradelane between North America and Europe.
The 45,000-ton, 296-metre long Atlantic Star, which departed from Hamburg, was built by Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding yard in Shanghai.
The other four vessels of the same design will be delivered next year, reported American Journal of Transportation.
The new design offers space for 3,800 containers, plus 1,300 cars and oversize ro-ro cargo can be loaded across 28,900 square metres of ro-ro space. That represents a 105 per cent increase of container slot capacity and 45 per cent more ro-ro capacity compared to vessels of the previous G3 class. In addition, 31 per cent more cars can be accommodated below deck.
If required, part of the ro-ro deck space can also be used for containers, creating extra capacity for 739 TEU. Thanks to modern propulsion techniques, emissions per container are 65 per cent lower than ships of the preceding class.
