On Nov 15, 2017, at 9.15 a.m. the "Mazu", a catamaran-type boat with 97 adult tourists and two minors, mostly from Germany, of the "Mein Schiff 6" on board, suffered engine failure due to a bilge pump malfunction halfway to the Isla de la Pasión north of Cozumel. The ship was quickly dragged towards the high seas and flooded by the waves in the area of El Cantil off the hotel El Cozumeleño. It started to submerge by the stern. Private boatmen, diving tourism services, jet skis and fishermen came to assist and after 20 minutes of maneuvers, the passengers were rescued by the Naval Search and Rescue Station (ENSAR) of the Secretary of the Navy with the support of the private boats. They returned to shore without injuries. An ambulance was on site, but was not needed. The "Main Schiff 6" had berthed in Punta Langosta in the morning, and the tourists had contracted a tour with the company "Isla de la Pasión" to be taken to the place of the same name, boarding the "Mazu" at the pier in Aldora. They were taken to the island with other boats after their rescue. A ship of the Navy of Mexico went to the scene too, but did not intervene. The half submerged "Mazu" was towed to port by the catamaran "Yacatecutli" of the company Ultramar and lifted out of the water for repairs.
