15,908-TEU MSC Venice delivered from STX Shipyard, South Korea
SWISS-ITALIAN Mediterranean Shipping Co (MSC) has taken delivery of the 15,908-TEU MSC Venice, the last of six same-sized vessels built at the STX Shipyard, South Korea.
Chartered from Zodiac Maritime and Eastern Pacific Shipping (EPS), the vessels were first ordered in October 2010 as neo-panamax 13,000-TEU class units, reported Alphaliner.
But the contract was upgraded a year later to neo-overpanamax ships of 16,000 TEU. The six vessels are the first containerships of this size built by STX.
The MSC Venice is to join MSC's Far East-Europe Shogun loop, offered jointly with Maersk, which brands it 'AE-1', within the context of the 2M alliance. She follows the MSC Hamburg, delivered in October 2015.
